About Item Lending -n- Duping

taken from mod Ash

The item lending system in RuneScape is quite complicated. Frequently people find that it's not working how they expect, and they reasonably assume that it's broken. For example, I've had perfectly intelligent people complaining to me that their lent items went missing, only to find that they were trying to retrieve the lent items from the GE collection box.

I'd quite like to rework how you get lent items back, to make it simpler, although there are other problems that need more urgent attention.

For what it's worth, the item lending system works like this:
The lender's item is moved to an escrow inventory (on their account).
A new fake version of the item is given to the borrower.
At the end of the loan, the fake item is taken off the borrower, and the lender is allowed to reclaim their property from the escrow inventory.
So if you've lent out an item, you should always see it in your Returned Items box (talk to a banker) and you should be entitled to claim it at the end of the loan.
Since the item is never removed from the lender's account at all, it's unlikely that they can be stolen. So far so good, anyway.

This is the exact way I described the system, nice to have a mod confirm.

Hej 06-09-2009 02:05 PM

Yes it works like this, because if it was the real item that the lender had, it would cause too many problems if a bug was found to keep it.

Flamin 06-09-2009 03:00 PM

Nice. I thought it as liek this.

Steve 06-09-2009 04:10 PM

Quite obvious it worked like this.

BUT, this morning 2 minutes after the Run Energy update, there was a Item Lending glitch where people managed to keep loaned items. A Jmod confirmed it on RuneScape Forums.

iGlitch 06-09-2009 04:56 PM

nobody kept no items the glitch was that the item was returned but the original owner never got it it.

Shall I post the picture of a Jagex Mod confiming that people did actually lose the items?

Shall I point out how idiotic that post was, or does someone else want to?

Thainerr 06-10-2009 05:30 AM

I thought all of this was obvious

dk1st 06-10-2009 07:24 AM

If the item on the other person's account is only a copy, then how did the glitch occur where people where able to dismantle Godsword's loaned to them, and then keep the hilt while only returning the blade?

(I never did the glitch so the above post is assuming that the item lending system was not altered after the glitch)

Oysto 06-10-2009 12:52 PM

Err, I thought that was a hoax.

Wonder why there weren't any vids of this, or any respectable players complaining about it. Probably nothing but a hoax ;)

Yeh, good to have it confirmed. I guess it finally denies the fact that people said they could sell etc borrowed items.

realm332 07-09-2009 02:48 PM

this is a great explination, one time i couldnt find my g maul, but it was in the collection box lol!

asdfasdfasdf 07-09-2009 04:40 PM

if you go to the rs forums.. they have a detailed explanation of how they dont really trade the item to them.. instead they make a new clone item and put urs in a hidden inventory

JJones 07-11-2009 11:35 PM

What do you mean by 'hidden' inventory? is it just a file of items that Jagex owns for the time of the lend?

Exactly what it sounds like. ;D
A hidden inventory. Basically, one you can't access or see at all. When lending an item, the item doesn't actually leave your account.

JJones 07-12-2009 10:08 AM

OOHHHHH okay thanks xD

True.

So if somehow, we could try to access this hidden inventory everytime we lend out an item, we could dupe it.

As once it returns, you'll have 2, Right?

Or maybe if you took the item out of the hidden inventory.. the copy of the item would never be returned because the original item is already gone. So you both get the item?

Someone find the hidden inventory so we can see =]

inQuir3 07-12-2009 01:21 PM

thx 4 info y0

Jello 07-12-2009 02:25 PM

My guess would be, it would be impossible to access the hidden inventory.

This looks like one thing Jagex didn't fuck up on.

mobeel 07-15-2009 11:55 AM

oh, i never thought of it like this

JJones 07-15-2009 05:11 PM

No no Jagex manages to fuck EVERYTHING up somehow. I bet someone will find hidden inventory

Gold 10555 07-25-2009 01:02 PM

Well that stinks :O Hopefully there can be a glitch involved in that we can discover soon :)

LilGuthix 07-25-2009 07:39 PM

i feel like a idiot reading this tbh

Snowmanman 07-26-2009 04:58 PM

If this is true, why was it possible to steal godswords by dismantling them? Did it just lock the item in the hidden invent?

1. it was never possible and a rumor

2. jagex fucked it up and when you did dismantle, the system was bugged and the coding made that a real hilt would come, becouse the name is just bandos godsword example. it can be possible becouse jagex can really fail.. but still the other person would of get the item back.

Ggakk 08-05-2009 10:13 PM

Hahah yeah Ive seen a glitch before that let the borrower and the borrist hav the item but the borrower couldnt keep it.

good explination tho

Ggakk 08-05-2009 10:16 PM

Again, if we could find a glitch that made it so it dupped the item that would be SICK.
