I personally recommend µTorrent with TPB, Mininova and Demonoid.

Before you download a bunch of games or movies, etc.. I also recommend that you check your bandwidth limit per month, if you don't know your bandwidth contact your ISP. As going over your limit, can result in extra fees. I learned that the hard way. >.<

You can't guarantee public sites as being safe at all. You should really check into this shit, TPB is being monitored by like 13 federal agencies around the world. Just open up Peerguardian in the middle of your torrents and watch how much is blocked from the anti-P2P(includes government) alone.
