Don't forget that other people were lending out axes. Most likely they discovered that the lent axe doesn't chop over the lesser axe so they simply equipped it. JaGeX most likely caught onto it as well and patched it up.

i dont believe this, jagex cant fix their bugs if they dont know them so yeh...

JaGeX doesn't need to know how the bug is done completely, just how it works. Thus patching it.
